Work permits for foreign nationals: what employers and employees should know
As a rule, foreign nationals need a work permit to work in Türkiye. Work permits are issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security under the International Labor Force Law.
Who applies?
For a fixed-term work permit, the application is usually made by the employer. In certain special cases, the foreign national may apply directly. An independent work permit is for those who wish to work on their own account.
For employers
- Employing a foreign national without a permit results in an administrative fine for the employer.
- A work permit is issued for a specific employer and job; if the workplace or position changes, the permit may need to be updated.
- Foreign employees must be fully registered with social security.
For foreign employees
- Apply for renewal before your permit expires.
- Working without a permit may also lead to administrative sanctions and a risk of deportation for the foreign national.
- Find out in advance what will happen to your permit if your employment contract ends.
Because the requirements vary depending on the individual and the nature of the job, it is advisable to clarify the current legislation and required documents with a lawyer before applying.
